Benjamin Rene Sorrell Longoria
Benjamin Sorrell was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is a printmaker and fiber artist with an interest in relief printmaking, textile printing and visible garment mending.
Benjamin's print work is motivated by many (often disconnected) distractions, but follows a trend toward abstract form and color relationships and translating the visual density of fabric patchwork into colorful woodblock prints. Pattern making, textile design and distressed clothing have importance and deep interest to Benjamin’s relief imagery as tools to explore history, and what people care about and hold dear. In 2017, Benjamin became a self-taught garment mender after taking interest in patching denim jeans. Benjamin has a family history of craft, especially a grandmother and great-grandmother that made dolls and fixed clothes for their family, pushes Benjamin towards textiles and mending. This knowledge lead to a love of textile art, patching, darning, Japanese sashiko stitching, and using these tools for a multimedia art making process. Advocacy towards minimizing textile waste, and a move towards garment maintenance, recycling and repair is deeply important to the art making process. |
